How to lay a 3-foot-wide flagstone walkway

Steps : 

1.-  Use a garden hose to lay out the shape and location of the 3-foot-wide walkway.

2.-  Cut through the sod and roots along the hose using a flat-blade shovel or edger.

3.- Dig 3 to 4 inches of dirt from walkway.

4.- If you encounter a thick root, cut it out with loppers.

5.- Install steel edging along each side of the walkway.

6.- Hold the edging in place with steel spikes.

7.- Cut slots in a 2x4, spaced 3 feet apart, and slip it over the edging to maintain the correct 

walkway width; install one spacer every 8 feet or so.

8.- Cover bottom of excavated walkway with filter fabric.

9.- Spread 4-inch layer of pea stone over the fabric; rake it smooth.

10.- Lay flagstone onto the pea stone, making sure the best-looking side is facing up.

11.- Press the flagstone into the pea stone, then tap it with a rubber mallet.

12.- Continue setting flagstones, while maintaining consistent spaces between them.

Steps to build a flagstone patio

1.- Define the Area - Draw the shape of your new patio with spray paint.

2.- Clear it - Remove any existing debris to start on a clean surface of bare dirt.

3.- Excavate the Soil - grade the area as level as possible. Your flagstone patio 

    should be even with your surrounding landscape once completed.

4.- Use Sand to Install the Base Layer - Sand works well for a flagstone base because 

    it settles in to slightly uneven surfaces on the ground as well as the uneven flagstone.

5.- Lay the Flagstone - Use your largest pieces in areas with the most foot traffic and 

    places where furniture will sit. Place the stones one to two inches apart on all sides, 

    depending on the look you're going for, keeping the gap sizes consistent throughout. 

    As you set each stone in the sand, wiggle it around to make sure the sand completely 

    covers the bottom of the stone on all sides.

6.- Fill in the Cracks - pour the Decomposed granite into the gaps between the flagstone 

    pieces and push the decomposed granite into place, getting rid of any air gaps.

7.- Water Down the Patio and Fill Again with decomposed granite

Note: Decomposed granite is a crushed rock material usually found in a tan color
