Cutting and Shaping Flagstones

Wear heavy gloves, a long-sleeved shirt, and goggles to protect your eyes, also wear ear plugs or headphones to protect your ears. When cutting or trimming flagstones and you use a masonry saw.

If you have a small project, then use a chipping chisel.

a.- Draw a cut line on the stone with a pencil.

b.- Tap the chisel along the cut line with a baby sledge hammer, making a series of cuts.

c.- Prop the flagstone so the cut line hangs over the edge of a piece of scrap 2x4 and position the chisel in the middle of the cut line.

d.- Strike the chisel sharply with the sledge hammer, breaking the flagstone along the groove.

e.- To shape the edges of a flagstone to fit into a gap, place the stone to be cut on top of the stones against which it will fit. Visualize the edges of the stones below and draw these shapes on the stone to be cut.

f.- Use the full blade of the chisel to chip away the edges of the stone to just inside the cut line, allowing for a gap between the stones.

g.- Cutting with a Masonry Saw is very loud and dusty. It's best to run it during a time when you will not disturb your neighbors.
